Further Firepower added as Bobby Chamberlain returns to MKL

The firepower continues to build for MKL as we welcome Bobby Chamberlain to the Lightning roster. 25-year-old Bobby joins us from Hull Pirates where he spent the previous 3 seasons, in a career that primarily centres around Hull teams, but which includes over 80 EPIHL games for MKL where he picked up 69 points. Bobby scored 37 goals and 71 points in 37 appearances in 2019/20 earning him 9th spot in the overall league scoring charts. This is a thrilling signing for MKL as Head Coach Lewis Clifford explains: “Bobby is a huge character and someone who I’m very excited to have in a MKL shirt when the season starts." "Over the last few seasons, his offensive stats have spoken for themselves, but that really is only a small part of the package we have brought him here for. He is a guy who will do whatever is needed for the team, whether it’s scoring an important goal, opening up space for his line [...]

Defensive depth continues to build with the return of Ross Green

The depth and experience in the defensive lines of MK Lightning continue to build as we are delighted to share with you the return of Ross Green for another MKL season.  Ross made 42 appearances last year picking up a goal and 12 assists and 42 penalty minutes in a string of strong and consistent performances in the team.  Now 28, Green - known to his team mates as Sloth – is continuing his long run as an MK hockey man in a career which started in the MK Storm junior system.  Proof to all of today’s juniors that you can make it too! MKL Head Coach Lewis Clifford paid tribute to Sloth’s long-term MK career saying “It’s great to have Sloth back on the team, a guy who knows exactly what it means to be an MK Lightning player and another one of our homegrown crew.” It’s a long term working relationship that Cliff has had with Sloth, whose family are also a [...]

The best team guy you could wish for. Halds is back with MKL for 2020.

Continuing our theme of team continuity, we’re delighted to let you know that Hallden Barnes-Garner is returning to MK Lightning for 2020/21. An MK junior, he spent time developing his hockey in Slough and Austria playing in the Eastern European junior league as well as time with MK Thunder before joining MKL last year. MKL Head Coach Lewis Clifford places massive stock in the performance and function of the team as a unit and picks players who will contribute to the whole. Halds is exactly in this mould as Cliff explains: “Halds is one of the best team guys you could wish for. He is loved by his teammates and always puts the team before himself. Hallden appeared 42 times for MKL last year, bagging a goal and 20 PIMs for his efforts. He took crucial shifts to take the pressure off the top lines and mix up the on-ice action, often disrupting opposition teams with his positioning, work ethic, and physicality. Still relatively [...]

Coach’s Player of the Year Brandon Stones is back between the pipes for 2020/21

Returning for a second season with Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning is shot-stopper Brandon Stones who joined us at the beginning of last year from Sheffield.  Brandon played 21 times for MKL, posting a .894 save percentage last season which was disrupted by an injury a couple of months into the schedule.  Despite this, he was a tremendous presence in the locker room and around the club and won the Coach’s Player of the Year at the end of season awards. Nottingham born Stones played his junior hockey in that city before spells across Sheffield, Edinburgh and Coventry in the Elite League, and a number of EPIHL and NIHL seasons at Sheffield via Telford.  He has represented GB at under 18 level. Brandon is the first of our netminding tandem to be revealed this year, and Head Coach Lewis Clifford is delighted to have him back for a second year: “Stonesy is the type of guy you would always want in your team, a [...]

His shirt is staying down from the rafters as MKL legend Grant McPherson commits for one more year!

There will be no re-retirement of the famous MKL number 9, as club legend Grant McPherson has signed for the 2020/21 season.  By very popular demand, Grant will be once again pulling on the Lightning jersey after last season reaching the tremendous milestone of 500 League games played for the team.  He was also voted as the Players’ Player of the Year, emphasising his role in the team and the respect he has earned from his peers. G himself is pretty chuffed to sign saying: “I am delighted to be back in Lightning colours for the up and coming season. By the sounds of things, Cliff is putting together a strong roster and although we’re not entirely sure when the new season will get underway, I can only but assure you, when it does, we will be ready to go. Lightning Head Coach Lewis Clifford underlined the role that G will play in the team: “As I have said before, leadership is one of [...]

Edgars Bebris to add to Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning attacking threat

We are delighted to reveal a brand new player for Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning. Please welcome Edgars Bebris to the club. 28-year-old Bebris was born in Latvia but spent his junior development years in Sheffield so qualifies to play as a Brit. At 6’4” and 198lbs he brings a strong physical dimension to his attack and critically picks up a significant points haul. Last year he bagged 32 goals and 33 assists for 65 points in 50 games, and 46 minutes in penalties. This put him 15th in the overall league scoring table. Head Coach Lewis Clifford has been clear that he wants to drive consistency and continuity in his squad for 2020/21 and so far we have revealed the return of five of last year’s team. However, the chance to pick up Bebris was a great opportunity because he’s a player Cliff has followed for years: “I have said a few times I don’t want to make too many changes to [...]

Captain Russ Cowley to lead the team in 2020/21

After three D men, it’s time to add some more up front firepower to our squad.  We’re delighted to say that this player brings goals and assists and is also is a true leader in our team to drive us forwards in our next campaign.  Please welcome back your Captain, Russell Cowley. MKL Head Coach Lewis Clifford picks up the story: “This time last year when I signed Cowls I knew I was getting a top end performer at this level, and he did nothing but impress me week by week.”  That meant a points haul of 16+37 for 53 points in 34 games – an impressive return, in particular in a season interrupted by an injury.  Overall Cowley was our 4th highest point scorer last season. But it’s not just points scoring.  On and off the ice, Cowley’s impact was felt in his Captaincy role and Cliff talks about the importance of this: “Strong leadership is something that is hard to come by.  [...]

GB Under 20 Assistant Captain Sam Russell to return to Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning for 2020/21

Welcome back to Sam Russell whose return to UK hockey last year following a stint in North America the year before was spectacular, with him picking up international honours with GB Under 20s at the World Championships, establishing himself as a regular fixture in the MKL defence corps as well as a few shifts up front from time to time.  That’s why we are delighted to see Sammy put pen to paper for 2020/21. This time last year, we were writing that this was to be a breakthrough year for Sam and he really stepped up and adjusted well in his first year of senior Ice Hockey.  Cliff picks up the story: “I’m really happy to have Sammy back in the team. Last season I was excited to see him in his first season as a senior after coaching him as a very young man before he went overseas and he really didn’t disappoint.” Sam had this to say about his return: “To say [...]

May…We Make A Difference

The amazing Milton Keynes Lightning Supporters Club have once again shown how much they care, and what they can do.  Here's what they had to say: During what are tough and worrying times at the present, it's fair to say that there are a lot of people on the front line who are going above and beyond during this crisis. As a Supporters Club, we have always prided ourselves on supporting and championing good causes, so when some of our members approached us asking if it was possible to support the good work being done by the local hospital and NHS as a whole, we decided to do something. Milton Keynes Lightning and the MKL Supporters Club are delighted to help launch “May...We Make A Difference”, a campaign in May to say thank you to our wonderful NHS and to help raise funds for the local hospital through the Milton Keynes Hospital Charity (https://www.mkhcharity.org.uk/ ) The SC will be producing a range of merchandise [...]

Defenceman of the Year Leigh Jamieson commits for 2020/21

Following last week’s signing of James Griffin, we’re delighted to reveal a further strengthening of our defensive capabilities with the re-signing of last season’s Defenceman of Year Leigh Jamieson.  A long-time servant of the club, 34-year-old Leigh celebrated his 500th league appearance for MKL towards the end of last season, as part of a career which also includes Elite experience and international honours at World Championships and Olympic qualifier levels.  Leigh is MK born and raised and started his hockey career in the MK junior system playing for the Storm. He’s a dominant physical presence on the ice, with sharpshooting abilities gaining him 13 goals and 53 points last year.  But the stats don’t tell the whole story.  Very much a leader in the club, Jimba as he’s known to his teammates is a valuable addition to our team on and off the ice as Lightning Head Coach Lewis Clifford shares: “Obviously it goes without saying that I’m delighted to have Jimba back in [...]
