MK Lightning is thrilled to announce the re-signing of Sam Russell for his fourth season with the team. After an unfortunate absence last year due to surgery, Russell is eager to make his comeback and contribute to the Lightning’s success in the upcoming season.

Despite not being able to play any games last year, Russell has shown unwavering determination and resilience during his recovery. His commitment to his rehabilitation both mentally and physically has impressed the coaching staff, and they have high expectations for his performance on the ice.

Head Coach Tim Wallace expressed his confidence in Russell’s abilities, stating, “Sammy has put in the work to have a great year. He has had a major setback but has battled through it mentally and physically to get himself back on the ice. He plays at a high pace and is not afraid to play a physical game.”

Russell himself has learned valuable lessons from the challenges he faced in the past year. Reflecting on his experience, he said, “This last year has taught me a lot, lessons that can’t be taught, only experienced. I returned too soon and it was just blow after blow. It was a reality I had to learn to accept, not fight. Being on the sidelines showed me both ends of the stick, I watched my team go through a winning streak and I watched as we struggled at the end – both felt very different.”

Having watched his team from the sidelines, Russell has gained a unique perspective on the game and the importance of team dynamics. He added, “The way I’ve pushed these past few months, I would never have normally had the capacity to do so. There are benefits. My team is coming to an important moment. Bowers, Grant, and Jaimo. They gave us history we need to protect.”

With his university studies now completed, Russell is more determined than ever to make a significant impact on the team’s success. He emphasised his dedication, stating, “I’m strong, I’m ready, and you will get absolutely everything I have. I owe everything to this club. I’m hungry to impact, succeed, and chase down our goals.”

Sam’s rehabilitation is well underway.  He will initially start playing as part of the Talent Pathway on a 2-way contract with Thunder to get fully fit, but he’ll be back in a Lighting jersey in no time.
