Match Preview: MKL vs. Telford Tigers 12th October 7pm

Telford Tigers come to Planet Ice on Saturday for the first meeting since Milton Keynes Lightning beat them to win the English Premier League play-offs in 2017. It was Lightning’s last game at that level before their two year sojourn in the Elite League – and they went out in style on that day at the Coventry Skydome. MK won 7-2 with Leigh Jamieson, the only member of the team with the current team (bar Lewis Christie), scoring the third goal to establish a 3-0 lead at the start of the second period. Our own Brodie Jesson was playing for Tigers in that final. Since then Telford have twice finished third in the NIHL1 and go into this weekend second in the new NIHL while Lightning will be looking for their second victory of the season to lift themselves up the table from ninth place. Tigers bring a wealth of experience in their team – three players, Jonathan Weaver, Rick Plant and Jason Silverthorn, [...]

Match Preview – Leeds Chiefs 28th September

Opponents: Leeds Chiefs Date: Saturday September 28th Key timings: Doors Open 18:00.  Warm-up 18:20.  Face-off 19:00  Tickets available here National Ice Hockey League newbies Leeds Chiefs come to Smith Milton Keynes Lightning at Planet Ice on Saturday looking for their first win – in common with their hosts. Leeds are playing their first NIHL games on the road as their new rink next to Leeds United FC’s Elland Road ground is not ready until early November.  They lost their first encounters with Sheffield Steeldogs 3-1 and Telford Tigers 5-2 while Lightning went close to gaining their first points last weekend with a 5-4 loss to Hull Pirates and a 6-4 defeat at Sheffield. Although the name of Leeds Chiefs is new to the competition there are plenty of familiar names in the side, including James Archer, who spent a year with MKL when they finished runners-up to Peterborough Phantoms in the old English Premier League in 2008-2009.  Last season Sheffield-born Archer spent with Hull [...]

Match Preview – Sheffield Steeldogs 7th September

Opponents: Sheffield Steeldogs Date: Saturday September 7th Key timings: Doors Open 18:00.  Warm-up 18:20.  Face-off 19:00  The long wait is over and it’s all systems go for the new look Milton Keynes Lightning team – and management – as they get the 2019-2020 season under way with a pre-season challenge game against Sheffield Steeldogs on Saturday (September 7) at Planet Ice. But while there are many new faces in the Lightning line-up it’s a case of déjà vu for some – not least Head Coach Lewis Clifford and his assistant, Ross Bowers, while Milton Keynes-born Leigh Jamieson is, at 34 years old, one of the veterans of the team. Ben Russell and Ross Green have previously seen service with Lightning while James Griffin and Harry Ferguson are the only returnees from the team that has stepped down from the Elite League to the second tier of British hockey, the newly formed National Ice Hockey League. Also joining the roster for the weekend is 21 [...]
