After three D men, it’s time to add some more up front firepower to our squad.  We’re delighted to say that this player brings goals and assists and is also is a true leader in our team to drive us forwards in our next campaign.  Please welcome back your Captain, Russell Cowley.

MKL Head Coach Lewis Clifford picks up the story: “This time last year when I signed Cowls I knew I was getting a top end performer at this level, and he did nothing but impress me week by week.”  That meant a points haul of 16+37 for 53 points in 34 games – an impressive return, in particular in a season interrupted by an injury.  Overall Cowley was our 4th highest point scorer last season.

But it’s not just points scoring.  On and off the ice, Cowley’s impact was felt in his Captaincy role and Cliff talks about the importance of this: “Strong leadership is something that is hard to come by.  You need it on and off the ice to raise standards and to drive the team on towards results.  It is also essential for the development of the younger guys within the team.  Bringing Cowls back ensures we have this in abundance in our team.”

Russ himself is delighted to be returning, and is eager to get started: “I am really excited to be back.  I think we set some great foundations as a club last year that we can build on this year”.  It’s the chance to be part of the evolving MKL team which also gives Russ optimism for the future: “Speaking with Cliff on the team recruitment and direction for the coming season, I think we have a great opportunity to challenge for silverware – which will be our main goal and focus this year”.  Amen to that!

Cliff’s view is that Russ’s performances will be an essential part of the mix of that team he’s building and told us how happy is with this signing: “Cowls is a consistently top-quality performer who plays absolutely every situation to a high standard.  He will be a linchpin for us once again this coming season and I’m delighted he has opted to return for another year.”

Russ finished with his thoughts on what it’s like to be returning for another year saying: “Our fans were outstanding last year, we are lucky to have such great support and I am looking forward to seeing them and experiencing it once the season gets going”

Cowley will wear his familiar number 17 jersey which is now available for Own and Loan.
