Telford Tigers are welcomed to Planet Ice for the second time this season as Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning look to build on their double victories last weekend.

Last time Tigers visited Milton Keynes in mid-October they ran out 5-2 winners against a Lightning side already suffering from early season injuries. Since then most of the injured have returned to the fray and head coach, Lewis Clifford, has strengthened the side with free scoring Liam Stewart and latest recruit Robin Kovar among the new recruits.

Stewart and Kovar, in particular, began to show some promising signs of a decent partnership during last weekend’s 8-7 penalty shot win over Hull Pirates and 4-2 win against Leeds Chiefs.

UK-New Zealand passport holder Stewart has already faced Tigers once for MK, scoring the second goal for his team in a 6-2 reverse in Shropshire half way through November. He will be looking to add to that tally on Saturday with a better result for the team.

But make no mistake Telford are on a roll which has seen them establish a three point lead at the top of the National Ice Hockey League – a position which was reinforced with a 7-4 win at Hull on Sunday, following a 3-0 success against Leeds the previous day.

Tigers have lost just once in seven games – a surprise 3-2 defeat against Raiders after they had edged that team out 5-4 in the preceding fixture.

Czech forward Dominik Florian leads the scoring for Tigers with 36 points from 21 games, including 15 goals and 21 assists. That’s enough to place him fourth in the NIHL scoring statistics.

Scottish firepower comes in the shape of Scott McKenzie who has found the net 14 times with 18 helpers for 32 points. But don’t disregard Brandon Whistle who is averaging more than a point a game as well. Having joined from Elite League Sheffield Steelers just before Tigers’ last MK visit he has 20 points from 16 games – seven goals and 13 assists.

Games between Milton Keynes teams and Telford have traditionally been keenly fought affairs down the years. This one is unlikely to be any different.

On Sunday Lightning head north again to face Hull Pirates for the first time away in league and cup competition. The two should have met on Humberside early in the campaign but the game was postponed due to a gas leak near the Hull Arena.

Face off against Telford on Saturday is at a 7pm.
