Star Defenceman Sammy Russell is back on the AIB Milton Keynes Lightning Blue Line

Fresh off the back of some serious ice time in the Elite Series, Sammy Russell has committed to AIB MKL for the 21/22 season.  20 year old Sammy made 13 appearances for Coventry Blaze in the recent competition, and 42 MKL appearances in the 2019/20 season where he picked up 9 points.  His career began in the MK junior system before he spent time at OHA in the UK and 3 seasons in Canada.

He’s known for his athleticism, skating and high work rate which make him a huge asset to the team as Lightning Head Coach Lewis Clifford explains: “I’m really looking forward to working with Sam for another full season. As a player who I coached when he was just a small kid I take a lot of pride and satisfaction from the player he is developing into, literally all through his own hard work, dedication and commitment.

The ceiling on Sam’s potential is so high, he’s an exceptional athlete, great skater and great at moving the puck, and with the right opportunities and guidance from both coaches and senior team mates he can continue to grow and develop and become a Brit at the top of the game.”

Sammy shared his thoughts, and you can tell he’s going to be back with some massive energy for the team: “It’s been a long time coming but getting pen to paper has already made this summer 10 times more exciting. After speaking with Cliff and the managing staff it was a no brainer.  The bar has been set high and as a group we want to approach everything with the highest level of expertise; we want to win and nothing less. I come back a little older this time and with triple the enthusiasm, we cannot wait to get back to playing as a group and pumping the adrenaline in that arena! Let’s go MKL!”

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.  Please welcome back Sammy Russell!

Sammy will wear his number 39 jersey for which the Own and Loan will roll over for the people who grabbed it for the 2020/21 season – Dave Bunyan will be in touch shortly!

We have two other ways you can support Sammy and the club too!  You can become Sammy’s sponsor with your name or company name read out every time he is mentioned.  Get the details here.
