Huge News!  He’s a favourite with fans and his teammates alike, and one of the most exciting players in the league.  We’re dancing with joy that our very own Disco, Liam Stewart, has committed to MKL for the 2021/22 season.

Liam is currently down under keeping himself sharp playing for Skycity Stampede in Queenstown New Zealand where he’s picked up 12 goals and 25 points in 10 games helping Stampede sit at the top of the NZIHL.  Well known as one of the most exciting players in the NIHL National, Liam picked up 58 points in 35 games for Lightning in the 2019/20 season and was a key part of a mid-season winning run of form for the team.

His background is top quality.  4 seasons in the WHL with Spokane, to EIHL appearances with Coventry and Guildford (via the ECHL).  He has represented GB at Under 20 and Senior Level, helping secure promotion out of Division 1B in 2016/17.

Well known for his engaging, happy and laid back style, Disco is a massive fan favourite in MKL as Lightning Head Coach Lewis Clifford explains: “There’s a good reason why there are more shirts sold with Stewy’s name on than anyone else on the team, and that is because every Saturday and Sunday night he does things that get people out of their seats.  He is a dynamic, skilled player that catches the eye, but on the flip side he is a relentless worker who grinds, hustles, blocks shots and grafts every time he gets on the ice.”

And it’s not just on the ice where he contributes, but in the locker room and around the club too as Cliff explains: “Off the ice Stewy is hugely popular amongst his teammates, his relaxed nature makes him easy to be around and he doesn’t seem to take life too seriously.  There are 2 sides to Stewy, the absolute competitor who wants to go on the ice and win every night who is willing to do whatever it takes, and the guy I look at in the locker room before some games who is so relaxed and confident that I think I might have to get a medic in to check his pulse!”

Always active on  social media, Disco told us his thoughts about coming back: “Sorry for the little Instagram tease but I was always coming back to MK! I’m excited to get back into it with the boys and get back to the UK. Hopefully we can complete a full year. See you all soon! Disco.”

Cliff summed up his own feelings about Liam’s return:  “Stewy really is one of the premium players in this league, we are lucky to have him here in a Lightning jersey, and I am really looking forward to him returning from New Zealand ready to excite the MK faithful for another campaign.”

We’re thrilled to have him back, and bet you are too!  Please welcome back Liam Stewart (in his brand new number)!

Liam will wear the number 16 jersey for which the Own and Loan will roll over from the 2020/21 owner.  Dave Bunyan will be in touch!

We have two other ways you can support Liam and the club too!  You can become Liam’s sponsor with your name or company name read out every time he is mentioned.  Get the details here.
