There will be no re-retirement of the famous MKL number 9, as club legend Grant McPherson has signed for the 2020/21 season.  By very popular demand, Grant will be once again pulling on the Lightning jersey after last season reaching the tremendous milestone of 500 League games played for the team.  He was also voted as the Players’ Player of the Year, emphasising his role in the team and the respect he has earned from his peers.

G himself is pretty chuffed to sign saying: “I am delighted to be back in Lightning colours for the up and coming season. By the sounds of things, Cliff is putting together a strong roster and although we’re not entirely sure when the new season will get underway, I can only but assure you, when it does, we will be ready to go.

Lightning Head Coach Lewis Clifford underlined the role that G will play in the team: “As I have said before, leadership is one of the hardest qualities to recruit, so having G back in the team, alongside the other players we have already signed ensures we have that in abundance.  There’s a lot to be said for having a guy like G on your team, a player who always puts the team’s needs before his own and who shows the newer players what it means to play for MKL.”

Last season G sat out a period of time after breaking his hand in a discussion with Hull’s Jordan Fisher in the very first League game of the season, and G feels there are still plenty of things he wants to achieve: “Having missed a good chunk of the 2019-2020 season through injury and then having the league cancelled right at the business end, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it makes me feel like there is a lot of unfinished business to take care of.”

Cliff is well known for what he expects from his players both in terms of skill as well as character and he was full of praise for the qualities G brings: “I have known G for a long time and I have absolute trust in him to play in any situation at any point in a game.  He is a fierce competitor, a leader and a player we can rely on to do what is needed as and when any situation arises.  I’m looking forward to seeing number 9 back on the ice when the new season begins.”

Fans will be delighted that G, a true Lightning legend, will be returning for another season and showing his heart, character and commitment, along with super skills on the ice.  Who can forget his fabulous finish for the tenth goal in our final game of the 2019/20 season!  Welcome back G – we love having you on our team and having you back in your famous number 9 jersey.

Please give a warm welcome back to Grant McPherson
