He hits hard, but his hands are silky. James Griffin is our second signing for 2020/21

We’re pleased to share with you Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning’s second signing for the 2020/21 season.  James Griffin – Griff - has committed to a sixth successive season in an MK shirt.  27 year old Oxford born Griff has been a hugely popular figure in the MKL team since his arrival, and brings speed, excitement and energy onto the ice along with great entertainment through his physical play.  Last season, despite suffering from a couple of nasty injuries, he posted 8 goals and 10 assists and 72 penalty minutes in 35 games.  He was our Assistant Captain and a great leader on and off the ice. MKL Head Coach Lewis Clifford tells us about one of the first players he got to put pen to paper: “I’m delighted to have Griff back on the roster and he is a key resigning.  He was hit with a few injuries last season, but that’s not unexpected for a player who plays the way and puts [...]

So that was the season that was

What a first NIHL season we have had!  Last summer was spent rebuilding the club from the ground up.  We started with an empty locker room and had to fill it with the right people and the right stuff to make us a competitive team out on the ice.  It took a monumental effort from so many people to make this happen.  Now, a bit earlier than we'd hoped due to the crazy world we are currently living in, we'd like to give our thanks to everyone who made this possible. Let's start with our team of players who came together to compete as the Lightning.  Some signed early, others stepped up and came out of retirement to help us when injuries hit.  In the end, we were blessed to have you all with us and we were carrying some serious momentum and form into the playoffs.  Who knows what would have happened! They are supported by our off-ice team of Andy and Dan [...]

Thanks for your patience while we sort things out

Hi everyone, Since the EIHA announcement of the suspension of the season, we've been working hard to bring everything into order.  We've been helping our players get to where they need do, so Taylor Dickin has headed home to Canada.  Tomas and Robin are working in the MK area so are remaining nearby for now.  We also finished up all of the kit cleaning and drying to make sure that it remains in good condition and that we don't have to have MKL staff heading into the rink now that the advice is to work from home. You will have some questions for us, and we will aim to give you some firm advice on the following as soon as we can: Process for refunds for Saturday's cancelled fixture vs. Telford Playoff weekend refunds Own and Loan shirt presentations Refunds for any group / VIP / Bench with the Lightning Arrangements for next season including season ticket sales, sponsorships, own and loan etc We [...]

Further update regarding 2 MKL Players

We have seen some comments around 2 MKL players self-isolating and we'd like to clarify the situation.  These two players circumstances are a separate issue from our reasons for not playing today - those reasons still stand from our post this morning. No MKL players have symptoms. The housemate of one of our players has symptoms and the player chose to remain away from the team as soon as that was known.  He has not been at the rink, trained nor had any contact with any MKL staff or team.  He is not showing any symptoms. Another player came to the rink and talked with some of the Sheffield and MK players.  We then spoke to him and during the conversation it emerged that his fiancee works on a hospital ward with potential exposure to COVID-19 patients.  On hearing this we sent him home as a precautionary measure.  At that time we didn't know he'd had any contact with any Sheffield player or his [...]

Smith Recycling MKL v. Sheffield 14th March Match Preview

Saturday 7th March 2020, Face off 7pm, Doors Open 6:00pm Tickets available here Sheffield Steeldogs make their last league visit of the season to Planet Ice on Saturday when the battle is on between sixth and seventh placed teams. For anyone thinking that the game is of little consequence, try telling that to both sets of players who will be giving their all for the bragging rights as the campaign goes into the business end of the competition with the play-offs looming just a couple of weeks away. Lightning, Steeldogs and Hull Pirates are locked in an almighty fight for positions five to seven with just two points separating the two northern outfits and MK squeezed in the middle. Hull have a game in hand on their two rivals but all three teams could still finish fourth – if Basingstoke Bison drop points. If MK and Sheffield finish sixth and seventh – in any order – they will meet again in the play-off [...]

On Saturday we are home to Sheffield, and tickets remain on sale as normal online, by phone or in person.  The match will run as normal, and there will be no restrictions on crowd sizes or entry arrangements.  There are no planned changes to league, playoff or Coventry finals weekend arrangements at this time.  We are in contact with the league so that we can engage with any planned changes as and when they arrive. We are working to ensure that our on-ice and off-ice team are looked after during this period, and in line with Government advice we are asking anyone with any symptoms (37.8 Celsius or above temperature, and/or a new and continuous cough) to stay [...]

A2B Airport Transfers Match Report: Hull 5 – 4 Smith Recycling MKL

Match Reports are brought to you in association with A2B Airport Transfers Hull Pirates 6, Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning 5 A Tomas Kana hat-trick was not quite enough to ensure Smith Milton Keynes Lightning success on Humberside when they lost out by the odd goal in 11 as the battle for mid-table places continued on Sunday. While on the face of it the finishing spots in the middle of the National Ice Hockey League may not seem to matter in fact they do in determining the end of season play-off groups. Fifth spot would mean Lightning playing the league champions but avoiding the second and third placed teams. With the top two teams in each group qualifying for the Coventry finals weekend fifth place would, on paper, be preferable. Lightning went into Sunday’s game in that coveted fifth place but the 6-5 loss at Hull Pirates meant they slipped to sixth – despite that there is still all to play for [...]

A2B Airport Transfers Match Report: Smith Recycling MKL 7 – 4 Leeds Chiefs

Match Reports are brought to you in association with A2B Airport Transfers Smith Recycling MK Lightning 7, Leeds Chiefs 4 Rio Grinell-Parke bagged a hat-trick on a night of celebrations for Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning at Planet Ice on Saturday when the team confirmed their place in the end of season play-offs with a comfortable 7-4 win over Leeds Chiefs. Before the face-off the club honoured Leigh Jamieson, who had made his 500th appearance for the club the previous weekend, with a presentation to him and his family by Lightning chief executive officer Claire Eason-Bassett - former team coach Nick Poole joining the ceremony. It was Poole who gave Jamieson his Lightning debut when he signed for the team in their inaugural English Premier League season – Jaimo having made a handful of appearances for the former MK Kings side. And Poole was able to witness his old side get off to a superb start against anchor team, Chiefs, going 3-0 [...]

Smith Recycling MKL v. Leeds 7th March Match Preview

Saturday 7th March 2020, Face off 7pm, Doors Open 6:00pm Tickets available here Leeds Chiefs make their final visit of the 2019-2020 season to Planet Ice on Saturday with Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning looking for the two points to almost ensure they qualify for the end of season play-offs. Chiefs have had a difficult first campaign in the National Ice Hockey League, mostly due to the delays in opening their new Elland Road rink – it only saw Leeds in action there towards the end of January. As a result of the problems player-coach Sam Zajac released the two top scorers, Radek Meidl and James Archer in early December. Although he was able to bring in Patrik Valcak to replace Meidl it is fair to say he has not racked up the points in the way his fellow countryman did. In fact although Brit Adam Barnes now leads the scoring tally with 47 points – 24 goals and 23 assists - Meidl [...]
