A2B Airport Transfers Match Report: MKL 8 – 4 Leeds Chiefs 28th September

Match Reports are brought to you in association with A2B Airport Transfers Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning are celebrating their first National Ice Hockey League win after a hard fought battle against new team, Leeds Chiefs, at Planet Ice on Saturday.  The 8-4 success was not sealed until the final five minutes following a fracas which ended with Chiefs’ netminder Sam Gospel being thrown out of the game on a match penalty for fighting Rio Grinell-Parke with his blocker. Back-up goalie Miles Finney was thrown into the fray with no time for a warm-up or to psych himself for the task. And twice within a minute he found himself picking the puck out of the net as Lightning made the visitors pay. The game was just 1min 27secs old when Ross Green was sin binned for cross checking. With MK’s Caly Robertson and Chiefs’ Chris Sykes following him into the respective sin bins for roughing at the three minute mark the Yorkshire [...]

Match Preview – Leeds Chiefs 28th September

Opponents: Leeds Chiefs Date: Saturday September 28th Key timings: Doors Open 18:00.  Warm-up 18:20.  Face-off 19:00  Tickets available here National Ice Hockey League newbies Leeds Chiefs come to Smith Milton Keynes Lightning at Planet Ice on Saturday looking for their first win – in common with their hosts. Leeds are playing their first NIHL games on the road as their new rink next to Leeds United FC’s Elland Road ground is not ready until early November.  They lost their first encounters with Sheffield Steeldogs 3-1 and Telford Tigers 5-2 while Lightning went close to gaining their first points last weekend with a 5-4 loss to Hull Pirates and a 6-4 defeat at Sheffield. Although the name of Leeds Chiefs is new to the competition there are plenty of familiar names in the side, including James Archer, who spent a year with MKL when they finished runners-up to Peterborough Phantoms in the old English Premier League in 2008-2009.  Last season Sheffield-born Archer spent with Hull [...]

Lewis Christie signs short term deal

Lewis Christie has signed a short term contract with Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning.  Edinburgh born Lewis is no stranger to MK, having iced 9 seasons for Lightning, and most recently for Thunder.  He has Elite League experience with Edinburgh, Belfast and Basingstoke and is a GB U18 and U20 cap. MKL Head Coach Lewis Clifford explained the thinking:  "Just one weekend into the real season and we have already picked up a few injuries, whilst it’s not unexpected, it’s also not ideal, it is important that I don’t leave the remaining guys vulnerable and short staffed so early in the season as losing players means more ice for everyone and then more injuries can occur." "Lewy is a solid and very dependable defenceman, and whilst he hasn’t played for a while, he has skated over the summer and he’s a guy who’s always in good shape. I’m delighted Lewy has agreed to come in and help us out for a while, he’s too [...]

A2B Airport Transfers Match Report: Sheffield Steeldogs 6 – 4 MKL 22nd September

Match Reports are brought to you in association with A2B Airport Transfers Two late penalties finally killed off Smith Milton Keynes Lightning’s challenge when they lost 6-4 at Sheffield Steeldogs on Sunday after matching their opponents for most of the game.  Lightning were still in with a chance of taking something from the encounter when they lost the services of Jordan Stokes for tripping and then incurred a too many men on the ice penalty with less than two minutes remaining. Having survived a five on three penalty only a few minutes earlier Lightning were unable to hold out this time as Nathan Salem killed off the clash with 21 seconds remaining on the five on three powerplay.  MK came agonisingly close to registering their first National Ice Hockey League victory but it was not to be – although it surely will not be a long time coming. The game was just 4mins 11secs old when Tomas Kana was sin binned on [...]

A2B Airport Transfers Match Report: MKL 4 – 5 Hull Pirates 21st September

Match Reports are brought to you in association with A2B Airport Transfers Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning came within a whisker of achieving a shock result against Hull Pirates at Planet Ice on Saturday – eventually losing by the odd goal in nine.  Had it not been for a poor start which saw the visitors take a three goal lead in the first nine minutes Lightning may have run out winners in their first National Ice Hockey League outing against last year’s play off winners. Instead they were left on the wrong end of a 5-4 scoreline. It was a fight between Grant McPherson and Pirates’ Jordan Fisher straight after the third opposition goal that seemed to stem the travellers’ goal scoring. Unfortunately McPherson was injured in the clash and took no further part in the game.  By the third period it was Pirates who were on the defensive – Lightning outshooting them 12-7 as they tried desperately to find the goals [...]

Our league and cup campaign starts in just 24 hours!

The pre-season is over, the skates have been sharpened and the ice is ready to go.  Time to kick off our 2019/20 league and cup campaign! Tickets Still available online, by phone 01908 540020 and in person at the rink. Game preview By a quirk of the fixtures calendar Lightning and their opponents at Planet Ice, Hull Pirates, will both already have some knowledge of each other as they met in back to back pre-season challenge games last weekend.  Pirates, play off champions last season, won both encounters 7-2 and 3-2 but that will count for nothing when the puck drops for the first game that really matters. With another week’s training under their belts, Lightning, under coach Lewis Clifford and his assistant Ross Bowers, will be looking to thwart Pirates’ threat and take the points to get their league and cup off to the best possible start.  The Humberside opposition have had a fine pre-season, winning all four of their challenge games against [...]
