Milton Keynes Lightning are delighted to announce the return of fan favourite James Griffin for the 2026/27 NIHL National season.

A cornerstone of the Lightning blue line for over a decade, Griffin heads into another campaign in Milton Keynes after once again proving his value to the team throughout the 2025/26 season. The experienced defenceman has built a reputation as one of the league’s toughest competitors and most reliable defensive players, combining leadership, physicality, and relentless work ethic every night.

The Swindon-born blueliner continues to be a key presence both on and off the ice, bringing experience and intensity to the Lightning locker room while remaining one of the club’s most trusted penalty killers. Griffin has become synonymous with the Lightning jersey during his long-standing spell with the organisation and remains one of the most respected players in British hockey.

Speaking on his return, Griffin said:

“I’m really happy to be back. It’s been a year of ups and downs, but returning to the club means everything to me and my family. I’m excited to get back to work and chase the trophies the fans truly deserve.”

Lightning Head Coach Pete Russell welcomed Griffin’s return and believes there is even more to come from the veteran defenceman this season.

“I’m pleased to have James Griffin back for another year at MKL. James is a legend at this club and everyone knows what he brings, he plays hard every single night and he’s one of our best penalty killers. But we expect more from him this season, and I know he’s ready to deliver it. I’m looking forward to working with Griff.”

Griffin’s return adds another important piece to the Lightning roster as preparations continue for the 2026/27 campaign, with the club aiming to compete strongly for silverware once again.

James will continue to wear his number 15 jersey for the 2026/27 season. Supporters will have the opportunity to Own and Loan his jersey from 7pm on Friday (when this news is announced publically) by contacting dave@b2promodesign.com, stating the jersey type – Light, Dark, Warm-Up or any.
