The depth and experience in the defensive lines of MK Lightning continue to build as we are delighted to share with you the return of Ross Green for another MKL season.  Ross made 42 appearances last year picking up a goal and 12 assists and 42 penalty minutes in a string of strong and consistent performances in the team.  Now 28, Green – known to his team mates as Sloth – is continuing his long run as an MK hockey man in a career which started in the MK Storm junior system.  Proof to all of today’s juniors that you can make it too!

MKL Head Coach Lewis Clifford paid tribute to Sloth’s long-term MK career saying “It’s great to have Sloth back on the team, a guy who knows exactly what it means to be an MK Lightning player and another one of our homegrown crew.”

It’s a long term working relationship that Cliff has had with Sloth, whose family are also a well known presence around the rink and the MK skating and hockey scene: “I have known Sloth pretty much since he first put on a pair of skates and seen him develop both as a player and a person over the years.  He is a credit to all his coaches over his career but of course even more so his family.” said Cliff.

Sloth played a number of roles in the team last year, and it’s his consistency and versatility which he will bring again this season, as Cliff explains: “As a defenceman, he can play in any situation, 5 on 5, on the PK and also last year he had time on the PP and showed he is capable wherever we put him at any time.”

Ross himself is very happy to be back and is optimistic for the team’s prospects this year “I’m really excited to be back with the Lightning and pulling on the shirt for another year.  Like the whole organisation, I was really gutted with the way the season played out, missing out on the opportunity to compete for some silverware. From my conversations with Cliff and knowing the team he is putting together, it was an easy decision for me. They’re a great group of players on and off the ice and I’m confident that we will be challenging for more trophies this coming year.”

Cliff has emphasised time and time again in his signings the importance of team and the roles people play in it, and Sloth’s return is no exception.  He finished by paying tribute to his contribution Sloth makes: “Sloth is a guy whose first thought is always what is best for the team. I have said it before and continue to say it, you can’t have too many guys like that on your team. I’m looking forward to seeing him wearing his number 21 jersey again when the season kicks off.”

You might always be the last off the ice at the end of warmup, but you’re one of the very first people we want on our team sheet Ross.  Welcome back – great to have you with us!
