NIHL National Update

The NIHL National owners group has tonight released an update on an upcoming series of games which will be played during February and March.  AIB MK Lightning was very much part of the planning and discussion of these fixtures, but we have decided not to take part in these games. We can see there are a number of benefits in these games taking place, but for us we would prefer to focus on our long term strength and sustainability with a view to participating in the full Season return to play we hope to see in September.  We’ll maintain our close working relationship with the NIHL National owners group and will work out with them what role if any we’d like to play in phase 2 in April/May.  Right now we’re not ruling this in or out. Returning to play is something we desperately want.  It’s not just the return of players to the ice which is important, but the ability for everyone to [...]

Virtual Air the Bear 2020

A year ago we were humbled by the generosity of MK Lightning fans when hundreds of bears were flung onto the ice after the first goal in our fixture against Sheffield Steeldogs. In these difficult times it’s not possible for us to run our annual fantastic Air the Bear event at a game so we are offering two different ways to participate in our Virtual Air the Bear. Donate to Willen Hospice With a lot of charities struggling for fundraising opportunities at the moment, we have decided to give you, the MKL fans the option to make a donation to Willen Hospice. Thank you for your support and generosity, the charity will hugely appreciate your support at this difficult time for everyone. NIHL National Update: Amazing Streaming Series Support and What Happens Next?

The NIHL National Owners Group met earlier this week to reflect on the Streaming Series and discuss the potential next steps in our plans to return to competitive play. There was general agreement that the Streaming Series provided valuable insight into the viability of behind-closed-doors play, and was very well supported by fans from across the UK. It provided fantastic entertainment over the three weekends and the group would like to extend huge thanks to everyone involved, including the clubs, rink operators, streaming providers and fans. Well done to all three teams who took part. Moving forward, we recognise that the world is changing and that there have been some positive developments in government guidance. Currently there are a number of NIHL National teams who are in Tier 2 areas which would potentially allow fans back in, subject to various rules and conditions, to watch games in person. There are also some in Tier 3 for which the restrictions are, at the moment, greater. [...]

Additional Defensive Depth with Zach

Following the first weekend of Streaming Series games, AIB Milton Keynes Lightning have added further depth to the defensive unit with the signing for the remainder of the Streaming Series of Zach Sullivan from Manchester Storm. Lightning Head Coach Lewis Clifford had this to say: "I’m really happy to have Sully on board for the remainder of the Streaming Series.  We are a little short at the back at the moment so to have a player of his quality contact me and want to play is a huge boost. Sully is a solid Elite League defenceman and he will make the right plays at the right times to keep us moving up the ice and be a big help with our transition game." Zach added: "I’m really excited to be a part of MKL for the rest of the Streaming Series.  Hopefully it is a huge success which showcases British hockey in the best possible way and leads to further games and a season [...]

Match Report 14/11/20: Swindon Wildcats 8 : 6 AIB Milton Keynes Lightning

Milton Keynes Lightning returned to the ice for the first time in eight months – pioneers in an experiment to bring back hockey without the fans as they travelled to Swindon Wildcats for the first of a series of six livestreamed games. While the result – an 8-6 defeat for Lightning may not be the one the team and fans would have wanted – the excellently produced stream attracted nearly 1,700 subscribers, some of them fans from clubs up and down the country, including those from a number of Elite League clubs starved of action. Both outfits drafted in players from the higher competition to fill gaps in their rosters – Lightning bringing back Lewis Hook from Belfast Giants plus Ross Venus and David Clements from Coventry Blaze. But it was some outstanding performances from the younger players, including man of the match, Ed Knaggs, that caught the eye. It was Wildcats’ recruit from Cardiff Devils, Matt Myers, who opened the scoring on 9mins [...]

Support AIB MK Lightning by becoming a Face in the Crowd!

AIB Milton Keynes Lightning are scheduled to play The Streaming Series behind closed doors, but you can still support the team by being a Face in the Crowd which will be displayed on a seat in the rink during the matches. Fans can buy a cut-out of their face and upper body, which will be displayed in the arena for all of the home matches where fans are unable to attend due to COVID restrictions. Why limit it to just you? You could have the whole family sat virtually in the rink! Each cut out costs £25 with an image of your choice printed on 100% recyclable material that is completely weatherproof. We’ll make sure the crowd is shown on MK Lightning TV and our official social media channels. The faces will be located in Blocks 4, 5, 6, and 7 to get maximum exposure on the stream. All orders must be received before Midnight on Wednesday 18th November to allow delivery time, and for us [...]

Introducing our Streaming Series Jersey

Following on from yesterday's league news about the Streaming Series, we're delighted to share with you the design for the jersey we will wear for these games. Incorporating a strong lightning bolt design and featuring the logo of our Official Team Partner All In Black along with the Zeus logo, the white design looks fresh and clean and gives fans the opportunity add a different coloured shirt to their collection.  They will be worn for the Streaming Series games.  Should we move into playing a regular season, we will launch the usual set of light, dark and warm-up and the Supporters' Club will be in touch about own and loan arrangements. For the game worn versions of these shirts the Supporters Club will be running a series of raffles to give you the chance to win. Details will be announced in the next few days. NIHL hockey is back with the Streaming Series!

The NIHL National owners group has been collaborating extensively over the last few weeks, and working with the EIHA and rink operators towards the objective of getting our game back on the ice. We would like to put on record our thanks to the EIHA, Planet Ice, Ice Sheffield and GLL Better Leisure for the support of our clubs during this critical phase of our season planning. We’re delighted to share that we have created a small pilot series of games which will take place in November, so that we can gather information to feed into planning for a competitive season launch in early 2021. This is how it’s planned to look: 3 teams: Milton Keynes Lightning, Sheffield Steeldogs and Swindon Wildcats No fans in-person attendance. Games will all be streamed on a high quality platform, with a broadly consistent experience across all fixtures and venues.  Tickets will be priced at £12, with a family ticket on an optional basis at £3 per additional [...]
