A2B Airport Transfers Match Report: MKL 4 – 5 Hull Pirates 21st September

Match Reports are brought to you in association with A2B Airport Transfers Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning came within a whisker of achieving a shock result against Hull Pirates at Planet Ice on Saturday – eventually losing by the odd goal in nine.  Had it not been for a poor start which saw the visitors take a three goal lead in the first nine minutes Lightning may have run out winners in their first National Ice Hockey League outing against last year’s play off winners. Instead they were left on the wrong end of a 5-4 scoreline. It was a fight between Grant McPherson and Pirates’ Jordan Fisher straight after the third opposition goal that seemed to stem the travellers’ goal scoring. Unfortunately McPherson was injured in the clash and took no further part in the game.  By the third period it was Pirates who were on the defensive – Lightning outshooting them 12-7 as they tried desperately to find the goals [...]

Our league and cup campaign starts in just 24 hours!

The pre-season is over, the skates have been sharpened and the ice is ready to go.  Time to kick off our 2019/20 league and cup campaign! Tickets Still available online, by phone 01908 540020 and in person at the rink. Game preview By a quirk of the fixtures calendar Lightning and their opponents at Planet Ice, Hull Pirates, will both already have some knowledge of each other as they met in back to back pre-season challenge games last weekend.  Pirates, play off champions last season, won both encounters 7-2 and 3-2 but that will count for nothing when the puck drops for the first game that really matters. With another week’s training under their belts, Lightning, under coach Lewis Clifford and his assistant Ross Bowers, will be looking to thwart Pirates’ threat and take the points to get their league and cup off to the best possible start.  The Humberside opposition have had a fine pre-season, winning all four of their challenge games against [...]

A2B Airport Transfers Match Report: Hull Pirates 3 – 2 MKL 15th September

Match Reports are brought to you in association with A2B Airport Transfers Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning had another great pre-season workout last night, this time at Hull Arena where they were pipped in a  3-2 scoreline from which there was much to be optimistic about. Goalie Brandon Stones deservedly picked up the man of the match award for his sterling work in between the pipes – turning away all but a trio of 64 shots on goal.  The hosts were held at bay for more than half the game despite outshooting Lightning 20-5 in the first session – Peter Fabus having an early missed chance before MKL picked up a too many men on the ice penalty at the same time as Lee Haywood was sin binned for tripping, both calls timed at 3min 10secs. Grant McPherson drew a save from Ashley Smith before Bobby Chamberlain fired past the post ahead of both teams being reduced to four skaters again as [...]

A2B Airport Transfers Match Report: MKL 2 – 7 Hull Pirates

Match Reports are brought to you in association with A2B Airport Transfers https://a2bairporttransfers.co.uk One of the best ways to get a brand new team ready for a season is to push itself to understand what it needs to improve on and feel the level of intensity it needs to work at to be competitive. This is why we chose to take on last season’s playoff champs Hull Pirates this weekend.  When we caught up with him after the match, Cliff was clear that his to-do list with the team has been massively helped by tonight’s game and he felt energised to be working with our group of players.  With more ice time and training together in the week ahead it’s a great chance to put that plan into action. Last night Pirates took the lead after 3mins 55secs through former Lightning star Bobby Chamberlain who finished the night with 3 goals and 2 assists. Hull’s showed some signs of what time spent can [...]

Match Preview – Hull Pirates 14th September

Opponents: Hull Pirates Date: Saturday September 14th Key timings: Doors Open 18:00.  Warm-up 18:20.  Face-off 19:00  Tickets available here With our first pre-season weekend giving us plenty of encouragement on the ice, with some strong performances and work ethic, it's now behind us so time to look to our second set of warm-up matches. National Ice Hockey League play-off champions Hull Pirates promise to present a stiff test for Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning when they visit Planet Ice for a pre-season challenge match on Saturday, writes Paul Brookman. Pirates beat Lightning’s local rivals, Peterborough Phantoms, with a Bobby Chamberlain overtime goal in the play-off final in April. Chamberlain is, of course a familiar name to MK supporters as he spent a season and a half here in the club’s English Premier League days.  Since then his career has mainly been with Pirates – having also played for the forerunner team, Hull Stingrays in their Elite League days. Hull have two new imports this [...]

Match Report 8th September: Positives from Game 2

Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning may have gone down to their second narrow loss of the weekend to Sheffield Steeldogs on Sunday but coach Lewis Clifford will have seen plenty of positives from the feisty challenge encounter, writes Paul Brookman. While at least 10 of the Steeldogs team were on last year’s roster MK had just two returnees plus less than handful that had played on the same team together. Last year’s National Ice Hockey League play-off semi-finalists Steeldogs will be buoyed by the 4-3 result at IceSheffield as the new season approaches. Lightning – with Brandon Stones in goal against his former club – got off to a fine start when Brodie Jesson set up Harry Ferguson to score after 2mins 13secs and it didn’t take long before a major altercation which ended up with four Steeldogs and five MK players each handed two minute penalties.  That gave the home side a man advantage from which they levelled the tallies up [...]
