Match Report: Raiders 3 – 4 AIB MKL – 21st November 2021

Two late Sam Talbot goals earned Milton Keynes Lightning maximum National League points at the Sapphire Centre on Sunday after the team came back from 3-2 down to win 4-3 against Raiders. There was never more than a goal separating the two combatants with the visitors unable to make anything of a seventh minute penalty on Tommy Huggett for tripping. Lightning then slipped behind while short-handed as Tyler Nixon, on loan from Sheffield Scimitars, was in the sin for hooking. A one timer from Jake Sylvester gave goalie Brandon Stones no chance with 3mins 14secs left of the first period. MK’s response was quick – less than two minutes later at 17mins 59secs man of the match Liam Stewart struck from Adam Laishram’s set up to equalise. However, it was Raiders who had the last shout of the session when Sam Cooper supplied Aaron Connolly at 18mins 24secsto give the home outfit a 2-1 advantage at the first break. Lightning twice had to [...]

Match Report: AIB MKL 4 – 3 Telford Tigers – 20th November 2021

An excellent performance by guest netminder Jordan Hedley together with well-organised defensive play steered Milton Keynes Lightning to a deserved 4-3 victory over Telford Tigers at Planet Ice on Saturday. Coventry Blaze player, Hedley, formerly of Lightning and Milton Keynes trained, blocked all but three of 37 Tigers efforts to earn the man of the match award. MK were without James Griffin, Matt Smital, Sam Russell and Lewis Christie, but were able to add Sheffield Scimitars’ Tyler Nixon and Milique Martelly to the squad for what was a tough encounter. Experienced Leigh Jamieson bagged what proved to be the game winning goal on the powerplay after 52mins 20secs following a tripping call on Nick Oliver before the visitors’ Jonathan Weaver gave Tigers a glimmer of hope at 56mins 6secs with a strike also scored while his team had a man advantage. Ed Knaggs was in the sin bin at the time for hooking and although Telford who had called a timeout managed to narrow [...]

Helping 6-year-old Jake Peill share acts of kindness this year

Last week AIB Milton Keynes Lightning #5 defenceman Ben Russell came to us and told us about Jake Peill.  Ben had seen Jake’s story on his local estate Facebook group, and wondered if the amazing MKL fans might be able to help Jake in his quest. 6 year old Jake was bullied by some children on his estate last year and was upset when he saw some others receiving the same treatment when they were out playing near their homes.  He decided that he’d like to show that people can be kind and generous, and seeing some selection boxes in the local shops he decided to see if he could buy some to donate to children in hospital, and to local food banks.  He even put his own £20 birthday money towards buying some, and has set himself a target of buying £200 of selection boxes for children this Christmas. He wants to buy chocolate treats for more than 200 needy or sick children [...]

Match Report: Bees 3 – 5 AIB MKL – 14th November 2021

Bobby Chamberlain inspired Milton Keynes Lightning to a weekend double over Bees at Slough on Sunday – but Lewis Clifford’s men had to come back from two nil down to win 5-3. Lightning who were without the injured James Griffin were able, again, to call on the services of promising Sheffield Scimitars defenceman, Tyler Nixon, to help breach the gap at the back. Chamberlain, involved in two fights at Planet Ice on Saturday, made a more positive contribution to the game with a straight hat trick to put his side back on track after Edward Bradley had opened the scoring on 1min 35secs and Josh Martin had extended Bees advantage within 22 seconds of the start of the second period. Ross Green set up Sean Norris with a quick reply to Martin’s goal – beating netminder, Adam Goss, 41 seconds later. Will Stead was penalised for tripping at 24mins 18secs, giving Chamberlain the chance to register the first of his trio 38 seconds [...]

Match Report: Sheffield Steeldogs 3 – 1 AIB MKL – 7th November 2021

Coid 19 and injury hit Milton Keynes Lightning were beaten but not disgraced as they suffered a second defeat of the weekend in a 3-1 loss at Sheffield Steeldogs on Sunday. As on the previous evening MK were missing nine regular players but were able to draft in five from lower league Sheffield Scimitars – ironically they were facing a couple of team-mates as Steeldogs added Thomas Palmer and Michael Danecko to the line-up. Ross Miller, on loan from Oxford City Stars, earned a man of the match performance in between the pipes – leading to some supporters calling for him to be signed up to the Lightning roster! Certainly, he saw a lot of rubber in dealing with all but three of 41 shots fired upon him. Joining him of the MK teamsheet was fellow Star and former Lighting man Logan Prince who was to make a significant contribution later in the encounter. Coach Lewis Clifford declared himself delighted with how his makeshift [...]

Match Report: AIB MKL 1 – 6 Swindon Wildcats – 6th November 2021

Heavily depleted Milton Keynes Lightning put up a brave battle but ultimately went down 6-1 to Swindon Wildcats in a National League clash at Planet Ice on Saturday. With nine players missing through Covid 19 or injury coach Lewis Clifford called on players from lower league teams Oxford City Stars and Haringey Huskies to go some way to filling the gaps. In addition Clifford was able to call on the services of Streatham two-way defenceman, Milique Martelly, who put in assured performance to earn the man of the match award. It was always going to be a damage limitation exercise to restrict the margin of the Wildcats scoring and although the five goal deficit was some kind of victory in truth the Wiltshire visitors called have stepped up another two gears if need be. Swindon gave a start to former Lightning favourite in goal, Dean Skinns, and although free scoring Polish import Tomasz Malasinski was missing from the line-up they were still able to [...]

Match Report: Telford Tigers 7 – 4 AIB MKL – 31st October 2021

A second half recovery from going four goals behind was not enough to turn the game around as Milton Keynes Lightning went down 7-4 at Telford Tigers on Sunday. Tigers fired in three goals in the opening 11 minutes or so to leave Lightning with a mountain to climb. And it was not until the 32nd minute that Sam Talbot was able to cut what was by then a four goal deficit – only for the experienced Jason Silverthorn to restore the hosts’ margin almost straight from face-off. Nick Oliver was handed a two minute penalty for tripping plus a further 10 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct with just 1min 19secs gone. However, that did not stop Tigers from opening their account with a short handed marker from Silverthorn, aided by veteran Rick Plant on 1min 52secs. Jack Hopkins made the supply when Joe Aston added to the tally after 3mins 57secs before another powerplay for Tigers proved costly for MK – Bobby Chamberlain given [...]

Match Report: AIB MKL 5 – 4 Peterborough Phantoms – 23rd October 2021

A change of line combinations provided the spark to fire Milton Keynes Lightning to a 5-4 win over old rivals Peterborough Phantoms at Planet Ice on Saturday. After beginning with the usual lines coach Lewis Clifford switched Adam Laishram to partner Liam Stewart and Russ Cowley on the first line later in the game while Bobby Chamberlain joined Sean Norris and Sam Talbot on the second line. The change bore fruit with a marked increase in the intensity of the offensive raids in the third period that saw three goals shared between the two lines. It all looked so different earlier on, as both teams appeared to adopt a cagey approach – just 10 shots between them in the first period telling the tale of how shot shy they were. As it was, the only goal came on 14mins 59secs while Phantoms were on a powerplay resulting from a hooking call on Talbot after he tangled with his opponent. Former MK junior Glenn Billing [...]

Milique Martelly agrees two way with AIB MK Lightning

He had the best NIHL National debut, with assured, confident end to end play, and a Man of the Match award.  That’s why we couldn’t be more excited to reveal that Milique Martelly has agreed to a two way contract with AIB MK Lightning.  We are hugely grateful to Streatham IHC and their Head Coach Michael Farn for making this possible. 17 year old Milique started life as a roller hockey player, and first took to skates when he was just 18 months old.  He started playing competitive junior hockey around 7 years ago, and has developed quickly into one of the country’s top defensive prospects.   He has spent his entire career so far with Streatham, Captaining the U15 and U18 sides and managed to pick up over a point per game through his career, even at senior level in the NIHL 1, where he’s scored 1 goal and 8 assists in 8 games.  This is thanks to his mobility, confidence and willingness to [...]

MK LIGHTNING DELIGHTED TO HAVE OAKHILL VOICE SOLUTIONS’ SUPPORT FOR 2021/22

MK Lightning TV has developed a reputation for quality and reliability amongst ice hockey fans. This is by no means an accident, it is the result of investment and hard work. Streaming from inside the cold, humid metal structure that is Planet Ice MK comes with a few challenges as our resident commentator Chris Dickens would testify. Fortunately MKL has been supported for a number of years by local business Oakhill Voice Solutions who have repeatedly gone above and beyond to make sure that our data connectivity is in place for match nights. Coming after a period of disuse thanks to lockdowns, the start of this season brought unique challenges that needed a new fibre circuit provision and connectivity improvements. For those supporters who watch the Lightning TV stream, you are probably aware that reliable network bandwidth to the internet is needed to provide a smooth and quality viewing experience. It is Oakhill who make that possible, providing exceptional levels of service and support [...]
